Merck Dream Team - NYC Apartment (Jam Edit)

Back in 2002 I organized a little show in New York City with my friends at Record Camp, Shadetek, and Sound Ink. The lineup for the September 1st show was Brothomstates, Machine Drum, Kristuit Salu (Jimmy Edgar), Team Shadetek, DJ Rupture, DJ Merck, and a bunch more people. The only person on that lineup who was on Warp at that point was Lassi. Looking back on it now, most of you probably would have wet your pants for that kinda lineup. Unfortunately, I don’t think we even got much more than 100 people. Nonetheless, I booked a little apartment in Chelsea for the week for Travis, Jimmy, Lassi and I to stay in. Needless to say, over that time there was some jamming. Some was recorded, some was not. Listening through those tapes a few years ago, me and Travis pulled out a little tidbit that we thought was kinda fun. Some of you may not be used to listening to ‘jam’ type material, so keep in mind its very different than polished releasable track type format. Its got no mastering to it, and obviously its created and mixed right at the moment without the ability to change things later. You kind of have to listen to the ideas in it, and then see how those could be formed into a cohesive track. But anyway, hopefully this will shed some light on what these guys do in the off time when they’re just playing with some gear amongst friends. Enjoy!

That was pretty fun - makes me miss live IDM, or just live electronic jamming in general. I used to see a few such things once in a while but don’t have much time anymore.

The worst part is, stuff like this track would be (in my humble but surely misguided opinion) perfect peppered in and out of dance mixes, when heard at clubs anyway. But it would never happen, even at the best of places.

Very sweet. I like the various beat transitions going on throughout, especially when the electro kicks in about a third of the way through. Sounds like a fun time was had by all. this reminds me a little of a day when i was at Chris’ (Colongib, from Kracfive) place when he was still going to school in Pittsburgh. I was doing some ambient paterns on the keys while he was knocking out beats from his lapotop and another friend was “playing” the volume control of an old tv, set to a dead channel(they actually had a ton of these old tv sets in their apartment–him and Noah, aka Octopus Inc.). This went on for a half an hour or so and we even amassed a small handful of bemused spectators by the end of the “show”. Wish we recorded and edited it though. Good times.

Heres some video footage from that NYC show (as seen on m3rck.net as well):

Second location footage in the video was a medium sized bar we did a group live thing at, on the LES. Though honestly the musical output wasn’t as good as some of the apartment sessions.
